Information about Singapore Red Cross Society (SRCS)
Red Cross work in Singapore began in 1949 as part of the British Red Cross Society and SRCS was incorporated by an Act of Parliament on 6 April 1973.
From its humble beginnings in a small borrowed office in a government building in Empress Place, the Red Cross operation centre moved to premises in former Maxwell Road Outpatient Dispensary and then on to the Asian Insurance Building.
As early as 1952, the uniformed Red Cross groups were established and soon followed by various welfare services.
In 1964, Singapore Red Cross ceased to be a branch of the British Red Cross Society and incorporated into the Malaysian Red Crescent Society in 1st July 1965.
With the separation of Singapore from Malaysia on 9th August 1965, the Singapore Red Cross found itself in an independent and sovereign Republic and began to take steps to constitute itself into a National Red Cross Society and work for international recognition.
SRCS was incorporated by an Act of Parliament on 6 April 1973 and it was admitted into the federation as the 120th National Society in November 1973.
