Singapore Red Cross Society
Red Cross work in Singapore began in 1949 as part of the British Red Cross Society and SRCS was incorporated by an Act of Parliament on 6 April 1973.
From its humble beginnings in a small borrowed office in a government building in Empress Place, the Red Cross operation centre moved to premises in former Maxwell Road Outpatient Dispensary and then on to the Asian Insurance Building.
As early as 1952, the uniformed Red Cross groups were established and soon followed by various welfare services.
The Red Cross House, presently located at 15 Penang Lane Singapore 238486, was completed and occupied on 1 July 1961.
In 1964, Singapore Red Cross ceased to be a branch of the British Red Cross Society and incorporated into the Malaysian Red Crescent Society in 1st July 1965. With the separation of Singapore from Malaysia on 9th August 1965, the Singapore Red Cross found itself in an independent and sovereign Republic and began to take steps to constitute itself into a National Red Cross Society and work for international recognition.
SRCS was incorporated by an Act of Parliament on 6 April 1973 and it was admitted into the federation as the 120th National Society in November 1973.
On 18 March 1984, the Red Cross Blood Centre was officially opened and by arrangement with the Ministry of Health, all blood collected would be sent to National Blood Centre for processing and distribution.
The Red Cross Hostel for the physically Handicapped Workers, which was established in 1972 at Block 20 Yuan Ching Road, was acquired by the Housing and Development Board for other purposes. As such, the Hostel was moved to Block 191 Boon Lay Drive #01-164/204/216 Singapore 640191 on 1 July 1989.
In exchange for the site at the Changi Creek, the former Princess Elizabeth Estate at 72 Elizabeth Drive Singapore 660000 was given to the SRCS for conversion into premises for the Red Cross Home for the Disabled and I was officially opened on the 19 August 1989.
